Goodbye Flickr, Hello Picasa online

Some time ago I had to upload a lot of photos to Flickr because it was an easy way to share photos with my friends.

I thought I wanted to use that rather than Yahoo! Photos (silly me, it’s the same company) because of the run-in I had with Yahoo!… at this point, if you ask me, I’d say that they stole my photos, but that’s another story.

Flickr has a decent service, but when you start uploading photos like crazy (as when I go taking photos like crazy), you quickly get to the limits of your free account. And that’s OK, they are a business, in the end, they are no charity.

Knowing that Flickr is part of Yahoo! I have had this resentment against them… so, I have avoided using Flickr, but since our baby is coming… I know that I will have to end up using an online service (other than this blog) to post photos, create albums and what not.

Yesterday, I was using Picasa, and I noticed that they had a new version. I was very very happy to read that Picasa is offering an online service. You can upload your photos directly from Picasa. If you are a Mac user, there is a plugin for iPhoto and an uploader App if you don’t use iPhoto.

Picasa Web offers 6Gb of space for $25 per year, and it’s free service offers 250Mb of storage, while this might not be comparable with the 2Gb of free storage that Flickr offers, it does not limit your transfer to 20Mb per month. Besides, if you get to 200 photos on Flickr, they wont allow you to show anything after 200… nice.

However, if you like Flickr, you can sign up for 2 years and save $1.99!!! So instead of paying $49.98, you’ll pay $47.99.

I will start using Picasa’s free version, then I’ll see if I really need the storage upgrade.

Update: Hey, is this the first time Google charges for a ‘Premium’ service???
